Moles
Features
- Cylindrical mammals with a head that is joined directly to the body.
- Have large front paws, like spades.
- Eyes and ears are extremely small.
- Have long sensitive noses.
Habitat
- Occur in many habitats.
- Prefer a damp, dark, underground environment.
- Emerge from underground during long periods of dry weather and food shortages.
- Underground tunnels can be anywhere from 33 to 40 feet or greater.
Food
- Diet consists mainly of worms.
- Also feed on beetles and minibeasts.
- Sometimes supplement diet with baby mice they find on way to surface.
Tunnel Systems
- Very destructive and unsightly to yards and fields.
- Large mounds of earth found on surface are called fortresses.
- Small mole hills in a line show heavy excavation of a tunnel.
